Neil & Gloria London, UK

Neil and Gloria had been together, on and off, for 10 years. Even speaking to them on the telephone I could tell that they had very different personalities, and speculated that this could be at the root of some of their challenges. As soon as they joined the Diamond Program you could see and hear the huge differences between them. 
 
He was very forthright and confident, she was much, much quieter and held back, not speaking much at all. Neil had travelled extensively and even as a teenager he had explored the USA alone. Gloria was a ‘hometown girl’ who had burst into tears when Neil had invited her down to visit him in London for a weekend, because she felt nervous about the trains and tubes.
 
Neil shared that he desperately wanted to be with Gloria, that was why he was back with her and sitting in front of us, and he freely admitted to being drawn to women who had a similar personality style to his own. Gloria was understandably upset about that but she also agreed that she often tried to get Neil to ‘change’, and to sit down with her for a long chat about their future and finding a place to settle down. 
 
As if their personalities, upbringings, communication style and needs were not different enough for them to cope with, when we spoke about their desires for the future we really hit a big one.
 
Neil wanted to ‘have fun, travel and earn a load of money’, Gloria wanted a 'place to settle, get married and have babies’. And it was this final difference that we could see was affecting their relationship negatively the most.
 
As they worked their way through the video program, and as we coached them regularly during the following few months, Neil and Gloria began to see how they could be together, where both their needs could be met, without the need to ‘compromise’. And, as we went more deeply into the masculine and feminine behaviours and differences, again both of them could see how, by being stuck in their pasts, how this was pushing them even further away from each other.
 
But what about their different desires for the future? 
 
They were amazing, as soon as they had decided that, no matter what, they would find a way to be together, Gloria suddenly declared that she could see how she had always run a ‘passive aggressive’ pattern to try and control Neil. She could see she had copied this behaviour from her Mum. 
 
Neil was so grateful that she had stopped any kind of ‘blaming’ him, he declared that he knew he had always been overly-assertive, even aggressive with her, and said he was so so sorry about that and all the other things he had done and said. Again a realisation that this was a pattern learnt from his parents. Gloria said that she had done what she realised she had always done in response, which was to cry to make him feel guilty. Neil said and yes I realise I always got even more irritated and exasperated.
 
They were unbelievable in their willingness to share their own part in their disconnection. We literally watched them fall back deeply in love with each other. It was a magical moment.
 
Gloria asked Neil for more understanding of what he had planned for them for the future, and the more she asked from this new open space, the more certainty he gave her! Now she was crying again, but not tears of pain, tears of joy. You see they hadn’t ‘changed’ (their personality, or their desires) they had just changed their approach to each other, and it was now working!
 
Neil and Gloria are now married and they have a beautiful baby boy. They have settled in an area that Gloria loves, and Neil still has fun travelling for his business. Yes of course, like all of us, they still have challenges sometimes, and when this happens they share, just like they did that day, and do what they know works best for everyone.
